This course aims to equip practitioners with the CBT skills necessary to implement evidence-based treatment for the most common psychological disorders. It comprises 21 days of teaching over two terms, including weekly supervision groups. Oxford is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence in CBT and the course draws on an impressive body of local specialist skill and knowledge. The course does not aim to prepare students to teach and supervise CBT. The emphasis is on acquiring, practising and communicating specialised clinical skills, within an explicit theoretical framework in relation to associated empirical research.
The course begins with a four-day teaching block followed by one full-day per week Friday over two terms, beginning in September. Students receive two hours of small group supervision weekly. One of the full teaching days will also be given to individual meetings with supervisors to review formative clinical submissions. Some of the teaching days on this course may be made available to a wider audience as publicly bookable workshops via the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre.
All participants will be expected to have an appropriate level of competence to participate fully. Reading and completion of written assignments will be undertaken in addition to the teaching day outlined above. Many students find it effective to set aside six to seven hours a week for private study.

Your mind is a learning machine designed by evolution for you to avoid danger, obtain resources, and reproduce. Thus, it might be surprising that thoughts often sabotage your attempts to do so. Yet it is becoming increasingly clear to psychologists that seemingly irrational negative thoughts, like many phobias, social anxiety , and depression , may have an evolutionary advantage — in very general terms, they ensure that you don’t take risks that your mind, on a deep level, suspects you cannot handle These mechanisms are to some extent subconscious and involuntary — they often override conscious attempts to take action.
You know that feeling when you want to approach a beautiful girl, but you simply cannot move or say anything? All this was very general, so let’s get more specific. Information processing and thoughts don’t go haywire in a totally random fashion; actually they often are distorted in specific patterns. These patterns are denoted cognitive distortions by psychologists. Some common cognitive distortions are:. Mental filter — You only pay attention to everything that goes wrong and disregard your successes.

Mark McGovern responds to participants in his web conference on implementing cognitive behavioral therapy and the Dartmouth-Hazelden Co-occurring Disorders Program. Q: I was wondering how culturally diverse your model of cognitive behavioral therapy is? Can you tell us a little more about the sample population in the field test and what were the lessons learned? A: Dating back to its origins with Aaron Beck in the s, cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, has been widely studied and implemented with numerous and diverse patient populations.
It has been used with people who have different disorders or problem types at differing levels of severity, and it has been delivered by a range of clinicians. The lessons learned are largely positive: CBT is effective, well tolerated, and beneficial to patients, and relatively easy for clinicians to learn and deliver. CBT poses some challenges for therapists who are used to a more “free form” or improvisational approach to their work. For some, using a guided curriculum may at first feel awkward.
However, we have also found that for these therapists their own motivation to try the curriculum and see how it works is the best solution. The other important lesson learned is that CBT works best when used by therapists who are already good clinicians. That is, therapists who establish a therapeutic alliance are nonjudgmental and empathic, and who are steady and reliable in their approach to their work are the best practitioners of CBT.
Of course, it is strongly recommended that clinicians be familiar with and have competence within the culture of their patients. A: Since CBT is focused on helping individuals examine their beliefs and how these beliefs influence their own feelings and behavior, it is not particularly culture bound.
